Understanding the issues we face.
We face many pressing issues as a community, including rising costs, coastal erosion, climate change, and a lack of affordable housing. In the face of challenges, it is better to be proactive than reactive.
Our most urgent issue is the structural deficit in the town budget. Rising costs are outpacing our tax levy and income-raising abilities.
As a member of the Select Board, I will be committed to comprehensive financial planning and robust communication about the cost of continuing to provide the level of services our citizens expect. This must be completed ahead of the FY26 budget season and our Select Board must come to town meeting in 2025 armed with a plan. Voters expect and deserve a clear explanation of the town’s funding needs over the next several years.
We must continue the efforts begun this year to maximize revenue outside of the property tax stream.
Once we’ve done the work of projecting our costs over the next several years, I am committed to a process that actively engages with the public as the Select Board makes decisions on how to address those costs.
It is vital that we are transparent about our needs and about the impacts of failing to address these needs.
Robust civic engagement is required for the Select Board to make decisions that are best for the town and that will have the public's support.
Once we’ve addressed our fiscal challenges, I am committed to bringing the same combination of planning and cooperation to addressing other issues facing our town. With good planning and consensus building, we can be proactive rather than reactive.
